Online Sportsbook: How Fixed-Odds Betting Works
An online sportsbook offers you a fixed price on an outcome and takes the other side of your bet. If India is 1.80 to win and you stake ₹1,000, the sportsbook owes you ₹800 profit if India wins, and keeps your ₹1,000 if they don't. The price you get is set by the book, and a small margin is built into it. Understanding that margin is the difference between betting blind and knowing what you're paying.
Key points
- The sportsbook sets the odds and is your opponent on every bet.
- Every price includes a margin, usually invisible unless you do the maths.
- Your odds are locked when the bet is accepted, even if the price moves later.
- On big markets, an exchange often pays more. On small ones, a sportsbook is often simpler.
How an online sportsbook sets its odds
A sportsbook starts with its own view of each outcome's chances, then shades the prices so it profits whichever way the match goes. You can see the shading by converting each price to a probability: divide 1 by the decimal odds.
Take a football match priced like this:
| Outcome | Odds | Implied chance (1 ÷ odds) |
|---|---|---|
| Home win | 2.10 | 47.6% |
| Draw | 3.40 | 29.4% |
| Away win | 3.60 | 27.8% |
| Total | 104.8% |
Real chances can only add up to 100%. The extra 4.8% is the book's margin, sometimes called the overround. It means that, on average, the prices pay out less than the true odds would.
These are example prices for illustration.
The same match on an exchange
On an exchange, other users set the prices, and the platform charges commission on net winnings instead of shading the odds. Big markets often end up closer to 100% before commission. Our cricket betting exchange guide shows how match odds, bookmaker and fancy markets compare on one game.
| Online sportsbook | Exchange | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the price | The book | Other users |
| Who you bet against | The book | Another user |
| Cost to you | Margin inside the odds | Commission on net winnings |
| Bet accepted | Instantly | When someone matches it |
| Can you lay (bet against)? | Rarely | Yes |
Neither is always better. The betting exchange online usually wins on price for an India match with heavy volume. A sportsbook usually wins on speed and choice in small markets where an exchange has little money waiting.
Sportsbook betting markets you'll see first
Sportsbook betting menus vary by sport, but most start with the same few markets:
- Match winner: who wins, sometimes with a draw option.
- Totals (over/under): whether the runs, goals or points go above or below a line.
- Handicap: one side starts with a head start, such as −1.5 goals.
- Player markets: a batter's runs or a striker to score.
- Outrights: the tournament winner, settled at the end.
Each market has its own rules on what counts. A batter's runs market, for example, may be void if the player doesn't bat. Read the market rules before you bet, not after.
How sportsbook bets get settled
Once your bet is accepted, the price is fixed. If India drift from 1.80 to 2.20 after you bet, you still get 1.80. That works in your favour when prices shorten and against you when they lengthen.
Settlement follows the market's rules: usually the official result, with special rules for rain-reduced cricket, abandoned matches and extra time in football. Most football markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalties, unless the market says otherwise. Each market's rules on the bet slip are the final word.
Before your first bet
A short online sportsbook betting checklist:
- Check the odds format. Decimal odds include your stake in the return.
- Read the market rules for the sport you're betting on.
- Check minimum and maximum stakes.
- Compare the same market on the exchange before committing.
Betting is for users aged 18 and over. India's position on online real-money gaming changed with the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 (analysis, Majmudar & Partners via Mondaq), and rules can vary by state, so check the laws that apply where you live. See the responsible gaming policy for limits.
Next: if you're new to betting altogether, start with sports betting basics. To see live prices, open the betting exchange sportsbook from your bet in exchange login, and compare one market against the exchange before you place anything.
