Andar Bahar Rules: How to Play and What the Odds Mean
Andar Bahar rules fit in one sentence. The dealer turns up one card, you bet on which of two piles, Andar (inside) or Bahar (outside), will be first to receive a card of the same rank, and cards are dealt to the piles in turn until one matches. The game has almost no decisions, but the payouts are not equal. This guide explains the deal, why the side dealt first pays less, and what the side bets are worth. Bet in Exchange's live Andar Bahar tables sit in its live casino.
Key points
- One 52-card deck. The face-up card is called the joker, or more accurately the house or middle card.
- Cards alternate between the Andar and Bahar piles until one matches the joker's rank.
- The side dealt first has a small edge (about 51.5%), so it usually pays 0.9 to 1. The other side pays 1 to 1.
- House edge on the main bets is roughly 2-3% at standard payouts.
- Side bets on how many cards are dealt pay more but carry their own edge.
Andar Bahar rules in five steps
- You bet on Andar or Bahar (and any side bets) before the deal.
- The dealer places one card face up in the middle, the joker (Pagat).
- The dealer deals one card to the first pile, then one to the other, alternating.
- Dealing stops when a card matches the rank of the joker. Suit doesn't matter.
- Bets on the pile that got the matching card win.
Which side gets the first card? In traditional play the joker's colour decides: a black joker means Andar is dealt first, and a red joker means Bahar is dealt first (Pagat). Many casino versions always deal to Andar first.
Why Andar and Bahar pay differently
The pile dealt first gets the first chance to match. If the very first card matches, that side wins before the other side has received anything. Over a whole deck, that head start adds up.
With dealing starting on Andar, Wizard of Odds calculates (Wizard of Odds):
| Bet | Chance of winning | Payout | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Andar (dealt first) | 51.50% | 0.9 to 1 | 2.15% |
| Andar (dealt first) | 51.50% | 0.85 to 1 | 4.72% |
| Bahar (dealt second) | 48.50% | 1 to 1 | 3.00% |
| Bahar (dealt second) | 48.50% | 0.95 to 1 | 5.43% |
What that means over time: at a 2.15% edge, 100 bets of 100 units each (10,000 units in total) cost about 215 units on average. At 3.00% the figure is about 300. Single rounds swing far more than that, but the average does not change.
The 0.9 payout on the first side exists to balance its head start. Without it, the first side would be the better bet every round.
Side bets on live tables
Many tables offer bets on how many cards are dealt before the match. Wizard of Odds lists sample payouts such as 1-5 cards at 2.5 to 1, 6-10 cards at 3.5 to 1, and 20 or more at 2.9 to 1 (Wizard of Odds). Payouts vary by provider, so the table in front of you is the only one that counts.
Live Andar Bahar vs RNG versions
Live Andar Bahar uses a human dealer and a physical deck on a video stream. RNG (random number generator) versions deal digitally. Both versions of Andar Bahar online follow the same rules. The differences are speed and feel:
| Live dealer | RNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Cards | Physical deck on camera | Digital shuffle |
| Pace | Set by the dealer; rounds take longer | Instant |
| Payouts | Set by the provider's table | Set by the provider's game |
Playing within a budget
- The main bets are almost coin flips with a 2-3% edge. There is no pattern to spot.
- "Streak" systems and doubling after a loss do not change the edge. They only increase how much you can lose.
- Set a limit for the session before you start.
FAQ
Which side is dealt first in Andar Bahar?
In traditional rules, the joker's colour is decided: black means Andar first and red means Bahar first. Many casino versions always deal with Andar first. The side dealt first wins slightly more often, which is why it pays less.
Why does Andar pay less than Bahar on some tables?
When Andar is dealt first, it wins about 51.5% of rounds. Paying 0.9 to 1 instead of evens balances that head start, and leaves the house an edge of about 2.15% on Andar compared with 3% on Bahar at 1 to 1.
How long is a round of Andar Bahar?
It depends on when the match appears. Sometimes it is the first card; sometimes it takes 20 or more. Round length on live tables, including the betting window, varies by table and provider.
Is there a winning strategy for Andar Bahar?
No. Each round is independent, and the payouts are set so the house keeps an edge on every bet. Choosing the bet with the lower house edge reduces the average cost but does not create an advantage.
